KANNUR: Making the police in the district mere spectators, the CPM and BJP are unleashing violence in Kannur, especially in areas where they have an upper hand. As clashes erupted in Kathirur, Malur, Cheruvancheri and Kankol since Tuesday evening, normal life in the district has been affected.  It is feared that  the clashes may trigger fresh spate of violence and bloodshed in the district.

Even after shedding a lot of blood over political dominance and sacrificing  many lives in the name of politics, the thirst for blood seems unquenchable for both the parties. And in December every year, the inflated rancour of the avenging groups shoot up and sets fire to the dissatisfied minds of the rank and file turning the district into a battlefield.

With the Congress and the Muslim League being pushed into the scene as victims of CPM violence and police bashing, the political situation has become a battle of ‘CPM versus the rest’ in Kannur, which sounds not so good for the leading partner of the LDF. Though the police and SP G Shiva Vikram, repeatedly claim that they are neutral in handling violence,  parties other than the CPM are crying foul over police stance in incidents involving CPM members.

Last week, the UDF leaders met the SP and handed over a complaint about the stance of the police during the attacks at Naduvil and surrounding areas.  We are denied justice by the police in Kannur’, says P Sathyaprakash, district president of the BJP.  Local leaders of the CPM are planning the attacks and the police are watching it silently’, he told reporters at the Kannur Press Club on Wednesday.
‘The law and order situation in Kannur is a disgrace to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Here, political opponents are being annihilated with the help of the police,” Sathyaprakash said.

In a protest meeting organised by the Muslim League against the attacks spearheaded by the CPM and police inaction at Kannur,  Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala  lashed out against the CPM and the police. “The police are responsible for the unrest prevailing in the district,” Chennithala said.
“If the situation continues like this, the UDF will be forced to hit back in the same manner as the CPM,” he said. ‘The police are not only inactive but also playing as a B team of the CPM. The Home Department is a total failure, he said.

Congress leader K Sudhakaran also lashed out against the CPM, especially at M V Jayarajan, who is the private secretary to the Chief Minister. “ Jayarajan is acting like a second DGP in the state. It is he, who leads the police in the state, not the real DGP,” said Sudhakaran. Jayarajan issues commands from Thiruvananthapuram to the police officers in the district, he said.
