KOZHIKODE: A major fire broke out on the busy SM Street in city on Wednesday. According to police, the fire broke out at Modern textile shop near Radha theatre in the street around 11 am.

Police and fire and rescue personal have reached the spot and are trying to extinguish the fire. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. The authorities are trying to evacuate the market.

No casualty has been reported due to fire so far. Ten units of fire and rescue units from different fire stations are trying to prevent the fire from not spreading to nearby shops.

In April 2007, a similar blaze near Moideen Palli mosque had resulted into the death of eight persons and the destruction of nearly 50 shops.

A major fire was reported in  2015 and two major fire mishaps were reported at SM street in 2010 also. In one of the accidents, eight shops were gutted completely.
