KOCHI: A protest march by the members of Kerala Students Union (KSU) to the office of Kerala Self Financing Engineering College Managements Association at Kundanoor turned violent on Wednesday.
Students took out the march in protest against the death of Jishnu Pranoy, a first year B Tech Computer science student of Nehru College of Engineering and Research Centre, Pampady, Thrissur, who committed suicide in the college hostel last week.
Protesters pelted stones and tried to barge into the office where Association members were holding a meeting. They also broke furniture and glass windows of the office.
Police later resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protesters.
Jishnu, native of Nadapuram near Kozhikode allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the toilet following an issue that occurred in the college. According to college officials, the 18-year- old committed suicide after being caught for copying answer from another student. However, the students alleged that the college officials harassed Jishnu mentally over the issue.
