THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu urging him to intervene to reduce the airfare hike by Air India in the Gulf sector.

In a letter to the Union Minister, Pinarayi pointed out that Air India has brought about a steep increase in airfare. The ticket rate for passengers brought by stretcher has been increased by three times as it went up to 25000 - 30000 Dirhams from 7500-10000 Dirhams, from July 20.

The Chief Minister pointed out that millions of Indians have been working in the Gulf countries. Majority of them are from the low-income group. They won’t be able to afford the current hike in airfare, Pinarayi said while urging the Central Government to urgently intervene in the matter.
