` 7.55 Lakh Goes to ‘Waste’: 12 BMC Staffers Boo

BHUBANESWAR: The State Vigilance has booked 14 persons, including 12 employees of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), for allegedly misappropriating funds by preparing false documents on transportation of waste. According to the anti-corruption wing, at least ` 7.55 lakh was defalcated by the BMC staff allegedly in connivance with two staffers of a voluntary organisation __ Jagruti __ which has been entrusted with the responsibility. The BMC staff include two health inspectors and 10 sanitary officers. The 14 have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act as well as for cheating under Section 420 of the IPC.

 The Vigilance investigated the matter after instances of misappropriation through fabricated documents came to its knowledge. During the probe, it came to light that registration numbers of the vehicles, which were allegedly engaged in transporting the waste, were fake. In cases, some of the vehicles turned out to be two-wheelers although on paper bigger ones were shown to have been used.
