OHRC issues notice to IG on torture in jail

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has issued a notice to the IG (Prisons) asking him to submit a report on the alleged torture of a local businessman, who was arrested and lodged at Special Jail, Jharpara.

The Commission, which took suo motu cognizance of the matter, has given two weeks time to the prison authorities to submit the report.According to reports, businessman Rabi Narayan Sahu was arrested on Monday and sent to judicial custody. When he arrived at the Special Jail, the warders asked him what are the charges pressed against him. Sahu apparently told them he had no clue about the charges. He was then allegedly assaulted several times during his stay at the jail. He was granted bail on Tuesday, but his body bore deep injury marks.

Police sources said Sahu and his brother Babaji have a store in Laxmi Sagar area. The brothers also claimed a plot, occupied by a woman. The duo had tried to evict the woman, who reported the matter to police. She charged them with assault and manhandling.His younger brother Babaji was arrested on Sunday and a day later, Rabi was held by the police. When the latter reached jail, he said he was subjected to inhuman treatment by the jail staff.
