Setting a precedent of sort, a bride refused to marry as the groom had come drunk to the altar in Chapali village under Mahakalapada block in Kendrapara district on Monday night.
The spirited act of 22-year-old bride has left the villagers and community members bewildered. At the same time, it has won appreciation of people from various walks of life.
Pravat Mallick (28) of Sahabajapur village was to marry Subhadra Mallick (22). As the groom arrived at the marriage venue drunk along with his relatives and friends and allegedly abused Subhadra’s family members, Subhadra refused to go ahead with the marriage.
Her family members held Pravat and his relatives hostage for a day and freed them only after the bride’s family was paid the money they had spent on the marriage. “I decided not to marry a man who was drunk on the day of marraige. That was an indicator that he was not a responsible man,” she said.
