Administration hikes maintenance allowance

Express News Service

The district administration has decided to hike the maintenance allowance of 217 members of 52 families who were forcibly thrown out of their village in June, 2007 by a group of people led by Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) president Abhaya Sahu.

The families have been staying in the Posco transit colony since then. District administration has decided to hike the maintenance allowance of these families from Rs 80 to Rs 150 per day for each family.

The administration was earlier paying Rs 20 for food and Rs 60 for medical and education expenses. The affected families had time and again alleged that the amount was too meagre considering the price rise of essential commodities.

They had sought the intervention of National Human Rights Commission and Revenue Divisional Commissioner (central) Arvind Padhee for hiking the maintenance allowance.

Collector Satya Kumar Mallick said as per the new amount, each family in the transit colony would get Rs 4,500 per month.
