All three BJD candidates elected to Rajya Sabha unopposed

All the three BJD candidates, Prasanna Acharya, Bisnu Charan Das and N Bhaskar Rao, were elected unopposed.

BHUBANESWAR: All the three BJD candidates for Rajya Sabha polls, Prasanna Acharya, Bisnu Charan Das and N Bhaskar Rao, were elected unopposed today.

Announcing this here, returning officer and assembly secretary Amiya Sarangi said the three BJD nominees were uncontested at the end of the withdrawal of candidature as there were no other candidates in fray.

The last date of withdrawal of candidature was June 3 for the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled on June 11.

A former minister, Acharya was elected thrice each to the Lok Sabha and assembly.

Bisnu Das, also a former minister, has been elected to the state assembly five times. The other BJD candidate, N Bhaskar Rao is now deputy chairperson of the State Planning Board.

Election was necessitated as the term of the three Rajya Sabha MPs Baisnab Charan Parida, Bhupinder Singh (both BJD) and Pyarimohan Mohapatra (Independent) will expire on July 1.
