ANGUL: The Angul administration on Saturday ruled out distress sale as the reason behind the suicide of a farmer in the district. A 60-year-old farmer of Angul district had allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday night.

The deceased has been identified as Parmanada Palei of Gurudhi village under Purunakot police limits.

According to his family members, Palei had raised vegetable crop in his field after availing a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh from a cooperative society and other organisations. But, the prices of vegetables crashed and he had to sell his stock at cheap rates. He could not repay the loan and as a result, ended his life.

Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Srinibash Behera, who along with three other government officials visited the village on Saturday to investigate the suicide, said Palei did not commit suicide due to distress sale. He took the extreme step because of family dispute, the ADM added.
