Telangana module for Vidhan Parishad likely

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government is likely to move a resolution in the monsoon session of Assembly for formation of a Vidhan Parishad (legislative council).This was informed by Commerce and Transport Minister and Chairman of the committee Nrushingha Charan Sahu, who headed a special committee to study the functioning of Vidhan Parishad in other states.

After visiting Bihar and Telangana, Sahu said, “The committee studied the resolution passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly for setting up the Vidhan Parishad. A similar resolution might be tabled in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.”The State Government had formed a five-member panel to study Bihar and Telangana model. Manohar Randhari (BJD), Pramila Mallik (BJD), Bhujabal Majhi (Congress), Nitish Gangadeb (BJP) were members of the committee. However, Majhi and Gangadeb had expressed their unwillingness to visit the two States.

Earlier, the committee had visited Maharashtra and Karnataka in 2015. The committee will submit its report to the Government soon suggesting modalities for setting up of the legislative council in the State, Sahu said.
