BERHAMPUR: A 65-year-old man, living with a fractured leg, travelled nearly 130 km on a tricycle from Nayagarh district to seek treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MKCG MCH) in Berhampur.
Shukadev Nahak, a resident of Barasahi village under Sarankul police limits, has been living with a fractured leg for several years. However, financial hardship prevented him from taking up proper treatment.
Nahak retired as a Gram Rakshi in 2022. Since then, his family’s financial condition worsened. His wife passed away, while his two daughters are married and his only son suffers from mental illness. That had left the elderly man to shoulder the family’s responsibilities on his own.
Nahak reached the medical last Saturday. Moved by his condition, Berhampur sub-collector Avinash Kumar deputed staff to facilitate his admission and treatment. He was admitted to the hospital’s destitute ward under the medicine department, registrar (administration) Sweta Dash said. An X-ray confirmed a fracture.
Hospital superintendent Prof Sudeepa Dash said doctors performed surgery on Nahak’s fractured leg after medical evaluation and he is now recovering under medical supervision.
