Overcome by grief after son’s death, 70-year-old Odisha man ends life

JAJPUR: A 70-year-old man died by suicide hours after learning of his son’s death, at Manisapatana village under Jajpur’s Mangalpur area on Friday night.

The deceased are Rasananda Panda and his son Steamer Panda alias Silu (30). As per sources, Silu ran a studio in Mangalpur bazar for the last few years. On the night of the incident, while Silu was at home, he was informed that a staff of his studio Bhiki reportedly consumed poison.

On hearing the news, he immediately rushed to the studio and took the staff to a local hospital. However, after he reached the hospital, Silu allegedly complained of chest pain and was admitted to the same facility and died some time later.

When Rasananda learnt about his son’s death, he was overcome by grief and reportedly hanged himself to death. Mangalpur police reached the spot and sent the bodies to Jajpur district headquarters hospital for autopsy. Further investigation is underway. Meanwhile, condition of Bhiki is under treatment at SCB MCH in Cuttack.
