CHENNAI: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Friday expressed concern over the prevalence of factionalism within the Thoothukudi unit of the DMK and underscored the need for unity amongst the party functionaries in the district unit, if they want the party to emerge victorious in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

During an interaction with the office-bearers of the DMK, held at the party headquarters here, Karunanidhi urged the long-time secretary of the party in the district,  Periyasamy and MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan, who had left the main opposition party AIADMK and joined the DMK, to work hand-in-hand to face the polls.

The DMK chief said that though there were two or three groups in the Thoothukudi district unit, no one in the party could be happy with the fact that there were unnecessary problems between them.

According to sources, many office-bearers had criticised Periyasamy’s manner of functioning during the meeting.

However, Karunanidhi, as a level-playing attempt, had hailed the contribution of Periyasamy to the party.

Stating that he would not tolerate any shortcomings in the Thoothukudi unit, Karunanidhi advised everyone to raise their hands as a show of unity and all the office-bearers followed suit.
