Divya, the caste-Hindu girl whose marriage to a Dalit boy led to a mob attack on Dalit colonies in the district on November 7, last year, has returned home on Monday. The re-union between Divya and her widowed mother has brought cheers to the caste Hindus in the area.
Meanwhile, caste Hindus are eagerly awaiting Divya’s appearance before the Madras HC on July 1, to see the stand she takes on issue. However, Elavarasan’s family is confidently that Divya would continue her married life with Elavarasan.
Following the suicide of a caste-Hindu Nagaraj of Chellankottai, whose daughter Divya fell in love and married a Dalit boy Elavarasan of Natham Colony in Naickenkottai area a mob attacked Dalits in Natham colony, Annanagar and Kondampatti, Sengalmedu in which 268 houses were damaged, vehicles torched and jewels and valuables looted. Police arrested 240 persons of Naickenkottai area in this regard.
After the caste violence developed in neighbouring villages, the district administration imposed Sec 144(1) of CrPC Prohibitory Act in 78 villages to control the violence and it was gradually lifted and till persist in Nacikenkottai area.
After the TN Government`s order the case was transferred from local police to CB-CID probe. National Commission for SC/ST, New Delhi led by its chairman B.L.Punia also visited the affected Dalit colonies.
As per Divya’s prayer, the court ordered to live with her husband Elavarasan in Dharmapuri. But in a turning point she appeared before Madras HC where her mother Thenmozhi filed a habeas corpus petition and deposed that she was willing to reunite with her mother.
