Racket was on for a decade in Dharmapuri

Express News Service

The police in Dharmapuri on Monday busted a major illegal kidney racket and arrested a broker called N S Ayyavu.

Speaking to Express, Superintendent of Police Asra Garg revealed that Ayyavu used to get Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh as commission for creating ‘sales’. He used to contact the donor and the recipient and prepare false documents for carrying out the transplantation procedure at hospitals. The police team also learnt that a few doctors were involved in the racket. The list would be finalised after investigation.

Garg said Ayyavu was in the illegal business for the last 10 years in Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Namakkal and Coimbatore districts. A special police team is now preparing the list of the donors and recipients. So far, the police have identified more than 25 such cases in Dharmapuri district, which is likely to go up after completion of the investigation.

As Ayyavu was a native of the Komarapalayam, where kidney rackets had been reported in the past as well, he could have been involved in more than 200 such cases in Komarapalayam, Palliplayam, Tiruchengode, Bhavani and Erode, the SP said. Garg appealed to the public to inform the local police at 04342-230989 and 94880 00007 if they came across cases of illegal kidney sales in their areas.
