110 shops to be auctioned in fish market

Express News Service

The Vellore Corporation has planned to auction the 110 shops built at the new fish market near Makhan junction to the public.

The new fish market was constructed at a cost of `1.25 crore following repeated complaints about foul smell emanating from the current fish market located at the heart of the city at Anna Salai. An additional fund was allotted recently to provide additional facilities such as sewage outlet.

Meanwhile, Mayor P Karthiyayini visited the new market in February and said it would be inaugurated by April. She also said tenders would be invited from the public to use the shops here, wherein preference would be given to sellers at the current fish market. However, the new fish market was not inaugurated, as more facilities such as water and rainwater channel at a cost of `25 lakh were being constructed here.

After this, the Corporation has planned to auction the shops to sellers. A resolution was passed at the recently held council meeting.

“Of the total 110 shops, 50 building shops would be auctioned for a monthly rent for three years, while 16 shops selling mutton and 44 platform shops would be leased yearly,”  Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran said.
