Express News Service

Around 220 CPI functionaries were arrested here on Wednesday when they resorted to picketing at the Education Department complex demanding the implementation of the Right to Education Act and streamlining of fee structure in the private educational institutions.

CPI state unit secretary, R Viswanathan, told Express that the private educational institutions were charging exorbitant fees right from LKG, to the tune of lakhs, as fee structure in the private educational institutions had not been streamlined. The CPI leader also wanted the government to come out with a legislation against capitation fees.

The CPI also wanted the government to introduce CBSE syllabus in all the government schools in Puducherry step by step and fill the vacancies of teachers.

Meanwhile, 50  activists belonging to human rights organisations were arrested by the Villianur Police after they tried to stage a protest against alleged police inaction in filing cases despite complaints. The activists who assembled near the sub-registrar office were told that they did not have the  permission to stage the protest.

Police sources denied the charges of the activists and said that they had acted on complaints.
