Upset over ill-health, couple commits suicide

Express News Service

A couple allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in a private lodge in the city on Wednesday. Police said that they took the extreme step as the husband, who was afflicted by paralysis due to a stroke for more than 12 years, could not be cured of it.

Police identified the deceased as Baskaran (57) and Maheswari (53), residents of TWAD Colony in Tiruppalai. Baskaran was a betel nut wholesale merchant and was also a former functionary of the Betel Nut Merchant’s Association.

The Thideer Nagar Police registered a case and quizzed the lodge employees, who said that the duo had checked into the room on Tuesday afternoon.

The cops traced their original address through their mobile phone data.
