PUDUCHERRY: Consequent to the rise in the number of vehicles here, the Territorial government has decided to establish Taluk- level transport offices for better, quick and hassle-free service to the public.
Everyday, around 200 vehicles hit the roads after getting registration. So, nearly 73,000 vehicles are added in a year.
According to an official notification, the Lieutenant Governor has accorded approval for establishment of Regional Transport Office (RTO)for Oulgaret Taluk by bifurcating it from Puducherry RTO. In addition, one sub-office for Villianur Taluk, under RTO Oulgaret and another one for Bahour Taluk, under RTO Puducherry, would also be opened soon.
At present, the vehicular population has gone upto nearly 8.5 lakh in the UT, according to the Transport Commissioner S D Sunderasan. Now each of the branch office would provide registration and related services to the residents of their respective Taluks. The Transport Department would post staff and officials to these branch offices as per the requirement within its existing sanctioned strength, he said.
Further, the vehicle series and related modifications that are to be carried out would be taken up once the offices are established, said the Commissioner. Similarly, the issuing of driving licences, smart card, capturing biometrics and other services would be provided, once the required infrastructure is set up, said the Commissioner.
The registration code of the Registering Authority of Oulgaret Taluk is PY-05. The Assistant Registering Authority, Villianur would fall under Oulgaret and would have the same registration code.
The series of the vehicles to be registered in Villianur Taluk would start with the alphabets V, W, X, Y, Z after the registration code PY-05. After establishment of the Registering Authority at Oulgaret, the RTO Puducherry would continue as Registering Authority for Puducherry Taluk alone and continue to have the Registration Code of PY-01.
The Assistant Registering Authority, Bahour, would come under the control of the Registering Authority of Puducherry and would have the same registration code of Puducherry, which is PY-01. The series of the vehicles to be registered in Bahour Taluk would start with the alphabets VA, WA, XA, YA, ZA after the Registration Code PY-01.
The services to be provided from these offices would be specified from time to time by the Transport Department.
