KMDK for Separation if Kongu Region is Ignored

Express News Service

COIMBATORE:The KMDK will not hesitate to demand separation of the Kongu region from Tamil Nadu if the State government ignores its problems and fails to take up welfare measures, party general secretary E R Eswaran said here on Sunday.

“Textiles and handloom are the base of Kongu region. Both the sectors are facing a downtrend here even as textile units in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh keep increasing. This is because of the lower availability of cotton in Tamil Nadu. So the State and Central governments should take immediate steps to increase cotton production. Steps should also be taken to promote other industries,” he said in his speech at a party conference here on Sunday evening.

“People from all walks of life, without consideration of caste or party affiliation should be united to fight for the region's needs. If this is done, Kongu region can send 50 MLAs to the Assembly to fight for its interests. We will then be able to get pending schemes implemented,” he said.

The State government should include milk in the noon meal scheme, to promote the farming sector, he said. It should also take steps to produce ethanol from sugar cane and lift the ban on toddy, Eswaran added.

Eswaran urged the youth of the region to join politics and protect their culture and rights. He also warned those attempting to defame Kongu culture that they would do so at their own peril.

The KDMK conference passed a resolution requesting the State government to erect statues of Dheeran Chinnamalai near the Coimbatore International Airport and in Pollachi.
