VELLORE: A two-hour-long search for a missing girl ended in tragedy for her parents when the child’s body was found in a drinking water sump, at Krishnavaram village near Arcot on Sunday.
According to sources, S Janani (4) was the only daughter of Sathish, a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Krishnavaram near Arcot.

Around 6 pm, the child was seen playing in front of her house. However, minutes later, the girl went missing.
A frantic search was launched for the girl, with neighbours joining in.
Around 8.15 pm, her body was found in a drinking water sump behind her house. Though she was rushed to a private hospital, the doctors declared her ‘dead on arrival’.

The Arcot Taluk police sent the body to Government Arcot Hospital for autopsy. While the police refused to give details of the incident, they said that the cause of the death could be confirmed only after the autopsy report came in. “Normally drinking water sumps remain close. We are unsure why it was left open. We are yet to arrive at any conclusion,” said a police officer.
A case under CrPC section 174 (suspicious death) was registered and further investigations were on.
