Former Tamil Nadu minister Arangayanagam sentenced for three years in assets case

The judge also ordered the attachment of the properties purchased by Arangayanagam by way of his disproportionate income.

CHENNAI: A special court in Chennai has awarded three years imprisonment to C Arangayanagam, who held the education portfolio in the first regime of J Jayalalithaa during 1991-1996, for accumulating disproportionate assets worth Rs. 1.15 crore.

The charge against Aranganayagam was that during his tenure as a minister, he accumulated by questionable means assets in his name and in the names of his wife and two sons to the tune of Rs. 1.15 crore.

The Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Department had registered a case against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The charge-sheet was filed in 2006.

On Monday, special judge for corruption cases M Gomathinayagam  awarded Arangayanagam the sentence and a fine of Rs. 50,000. The other three accused, his wife and two sons, were acquitted.

The judge also ordered the attachment of the properties purchased by Arangayanagam by way of his disproportionate income.

The judge, however, granted bail to Aranganayagam on the condition that he execute a personal bond for Rs. 25,000 with two sureties for a like sum to the satisfaction of the same court.
