VELLORE:Three persons including the driver of a container lorry were arrested by a joint police team from Arcot and Faridabad stations on Saturday for allegedly hijacking the vehicle in which 128 refrigerators were being transported by a private firm from Haryana to Chennai.

The police investigation has revealed that the gang had sold about 78 of them for Rs 6,000 each in a local market in Arcot against its showroom value of Rs 18,000.Police sources said the transport order was placed by Suresh Kumar Sharma (45), a native of Faridabad in Haryana, who has been transporting home appliances and electronic goods for many leading brands across the country.

“He got the order for transporting 128 refrigerators for a leading brand from Haryana to its dealer at Redhills in Chennai. Subsequently, the booking was done on July 5.

“The goods laden container was driven by Azharuddin (30) of Faridabad and he was asked to deliver it by July 12. The driver’s phone went out of range since July 11 and Sharma was shocked to realise that his goods were not delivered.”

Subsequently, a team of police nabbed driver Azharuddin in Pernambut on Friday.Further investigation revealed that he had sold 50 refrigerators to Javeed (28) and Taprose Ahamed (48)) of Pernambut. “Then, the trio stocked the remaining 78 fridges at a marriage hall in Mel Visharam and began selling one by one for Rs 6,000 in the local market.”
