CHENNAI: Various political parties in the State, including DMK, MDMK, CPM, have demanded by-elections for the 20 Assembly segments, which are lying vacant, at the earliest to address the plight of the public concerned.

The PMK wants an election for the entire Assembly to enable the formation of a new government.
DMK president MK Stalin told media persons that the party’s principle was that democracy and ethics of democracy should be protected. Hence, the party did not bother about the case verdict.
But, the Election Commission should hold the by-election for all the 20 Assembly constituencies at the earliest.

Already no developmental works have been carried out in the 20 Assembly segments due to lack of elected representatives. Hence, by-elections should be conducted at the earliest, he said.
MDMK general secretary Vaiko told presspersons that the only urgent need is holding by-elections in the 20 Assembly constituencies at the earliest. The bye-elections should not be postponed with the aim to conduct them along with general elections. This is because almost eight months are left for parliamentary elections.

The state executive of CPM said the Election Commission should conduct by-elections for the vacant seats at the earliest.

In a press release, ER Eswaran, general secretary of Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi, said in the present situation, all should come forward to offer a chance to the people and to accept their verdict. It would be a benefit for some political leaders by filing an appeal against today’s verdict. But, it will not be good for people of Tamil Nadu.

Anbumani Ramadoss, Dharmapuri MP, said conducting fresh elections to the Assembly is the only solution to end all confusion in the State. Thol Thirumavalavan, founder president of VCK, said it was a ‘shocking verdict’ and it should be legally opposed. At the same time, he urged that the by-elections for the 18 Assembly segments should be conducted at the earliest as the people of the constituencies concerned were not having their elected representatives for more than a year.
