CHENNAI: Prema Srinivasan, who was part of the TVS family and mother of Chairman of TVS Motors Venu Srinivasan and Gopal Srinivasan, chairman and managing director of TVS Capital Funds, passed away on Sunday. She was 90. She is survived by her two sons, two daughters and grandchildren
Daughter of a former customs official, K Rangaswamy, she was married to TS Srinivasan, the youngest son of TVS Group founder TV Sundaram Iyengar. A great patron of Carnatic music, she also founded the Environmental Society of Madras, which was created to make children aware of climate change and a movement to raise awareness on the pollution of the river systems.
Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was saddened to hear about the death of Prema.
An author and avid reader, Prema wrote the ‘Pure Vegetarian CookBook’, an extensive guide to traditional Indian vegetarian cooking.
She studied art and history at Columbia University, New York, in her sixties. Prema studied Vaishnava ritual traditions and, in time, became an authority on these traditions in Chennai.
Prema was also among the elite club of women golfers from erstwhile Madras. Her interest in philosopher, speaker and writer J Krishnamurti’s philosophy led to the establishment of the ‘The School’ under the aegis of the Krishnamurti Foundation India, in Chennai. She also formally studied Japanese Landscape Design in Kyoto.
