Tamil Nadu forms high-level committee to draft state urban development policy

The committee will be headed by the Chief Secretary and of the 18 members, 10 are from various state government departments.

CHENNAI: The state government has constituted an 18-member high-level committee for drafting the state urban development policy as proposed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). 

The committee will be headed by the Chief Secretary and of the 18 members, 10 are from various state government departments. The rest of the experts are from institutions like the National Institute of Urban Affairs, National Institute of Technology, Trichy, IIT Madras, School of Planning and Architecture in  Delhi, Anna University, Madras Institute of Development Studies, a former planner from Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority and a former Hudco official.

The state high-level committee will undertake state-specific studies which will be funded under the Technical sub-mission component of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 Scheme.

The state high-level committee was formed after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman’s announcement of having a high-level committee of experts to recommend urban sector policies, capacity building, implementation and governance during the Union budget. The Centre has already constituted a 10-member core committee chaired by Keshav Varma, a former sector director of the World Bank and former chairman of Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation in Ahmedabad.
