COIMBATORE: The popular Baralikadu eco-tourism centre near Karamadai in Coimbatore, which was temporarily closed to tourists due to heavy rainfall warning issued by the meteorological department, has been reopened for visitors. Forest department officials confirmed that tourism activities, jointly managed by the department and local tribal communities, have now resumed.
Located near the Pillur Dam’s catchment area, Baralikadu has emerged as a sought-after nature getaway, attracting tourists looking to experience the region's scenic landscapes and tribal culture. Visitors are required to make prior online bookings to access the facility.
The centre had remained shut from May 12 to May 20 following a red alert and forecasts of heavy rainfall in Coimbatore, Tiruppur and the Nilgiris districts. Forest officials said the temporary closure was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of tourists and staff amid adverse weather conditions.
With the intensity of rainfall reducing over the past few days, authorities have decided to reopen the facility to the public. A senior forest official said that unlike last year, when the eco-tourism centre was not opened for visitors during the month of May, this summer season has witnessed encouraging public response.
"So far, nearly 2,000 to 3,000 tourists have visited Baralikadu this season," the official said. The facility will remain open on all days until May 31, after which it will function only on weekends from June 1 onwards.
