COIMBATORE: With the formation of a new government led by TVK, uncertainty has begun to surround several key infrastructure and civic projects announced during the previous DMK regime, particularly in Coimbatore. Many projects proposed, announced, or sent for approvals over the past few years are yet to take off.
Among the major projects now hanging in the balance is the extension of the G D Naidu flyover from Goldwins to Neelambur. The project -- announced after the inauguration of the 10.1-km flyover on Avinashi Road, currently the longest in the state -- recently received the much-awaited NOC from the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Other infrastructure and civic projects announced by the previous government include Semmozhi Park phase II expansion, aviary on the VOC Zoo premises, multi-level car parking facilities at Gandhipuram, Raja Street, and Race Course, phase II rejuvenation of the Sanganoor canal, widening of Sathyamangalam Road, and the long-pending Western Ring Road Phase II aimed at easing congestion. The Saravanampatti flyover project, considered key to decongest one of the city's busiest IT corridors, also remains in limbo after facing repeated hurdles and alignment concerns linked to the proposed metro rail project.
Coimbatore residents say the city has witnessed rapid urban growth over the last decade, but infrastructure development has not kept a similar pace. Social activists and trade bodies have urged the TVK-led government to avoid political considerations and continue projects that benefit the public. S Vivin Saravan, a city-based civic activist, said, "Governments may change, but projects meant for public welfare should not be abandoned midway."
With Coimbatore continuing to emerge as one of the state's fastest-growing urban centres, all eyes are now on the new government's next move regarding these projects.
