HYDERABAD: Congress deputy floor leader in State Legislative Assembly T Jeevan Reddy demanded the state government to immediately increase the reservation for STs from the present six per cent to ten per cent. He submitted a memorandum to officials at CMO on Friday.

Speaking to reporters later, he said the MBBS admissions have been started in the state and the ST students are losing a good number of seats as the reservation has not increased.

The ST reservations are only six per cent now. Due to non-implementation of ten per cent reservations, the ST students were losing four per cent seats against the total 3,000 MBBS seats in the state. It means that the ST students would lose 120 seats per year, Jeevan Reddy said.

He added that increasing the ST reservation quota requires no permission from the Central government and that the state government could to do so through a GO.Jeevan Reddy recalled that the 4 per cent reservations to STs were increased to six per cent through GO 167 in July, 1986. Increasing ST reservations through GO would not lead to any legal complications, Reddy added.
