BHUPALPALLY: Telangana police unearthed and defused two landmines reportedly planted by banned CPI (Maoist) party members on a road near Allubaka village between Venkatapuram and Cherla on Monday.

According to Euturnagaram ASP Rahul Hegde, the mines were detected by police Road Operation Party (ROB), who were on their routine scanning of the Venkatapuram-Cherla road. "As the party reached Allubaka, they saw wires coming out of earth near a road passing a culvert. The road was unnaturally low. They got suspicious and immediately alerted the bomb squad, who successfully defused the two mines, which were kept in an aluminum bucket," he said.

The ASP stated that the landmines were planted purportedly targeting the police in the Telangana - Chhattisgarh border area."There are a lot of Shandies in Allubaka where people from nearby villages and Chattisgarh visit on a regular basis. Even the Maoists visit the area to collect their rations. Hence, the police regularly keep track of activities in the area. Since many politicians and police pass through this route, the mines were planted to target them," he said.

The ASP believed that the mines were placed after the roads were laid as it was covered with mud and stones.
