NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 Summit in Rio.

“We noted the progress in the recent disengagement in the India-China border areas. We also exchanged views on further steps in our bilateral ties and discussed the prevailing global situation,” said Dr Jaishankar on Tuesday.

The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-border rivers, direct flights and media exchanges were also discussed.

Wang Yi expressed optimism on the resumption of direct flights between India and China. He also spoke about the journalists' movement and the increase in visa approval to encourage people-to-people ties.

The two ministers expressed that the focus needed to be on stabilizing ties, managing differences and taking the next step.

Meanwhile, a few days back Dr Jaishankar had said that the disengagement part of the ‘problem’ with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh has been addressed.

Indian and Chinese militaries completed the disengagement exercise in Damchok and Depsang in eastern Ladakh along with LAC last month after the two sides reached an agreement to resolve the border row.

India and China also resumed patrolling activities in two areas after a gap of four and half years.

Both nations will mark 75 years of diplomatic ties next year.
