VISAKHAPATNAM: As a part of its modernisation plans and to enhance security, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has decided to implement Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based access control systems.

The officials opine that the RFID would remove bottlenecks to ensure seamless movements of traffic through the port gates, ensure tracking, tracing of men, material, vehicle, equipment and other assets.

Kerala based KELTRON (Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation), an undertaking of  the Government of Kerala), has been awarded the contract of setting up the RFID system. The project will be materialised at a cost of `6.95 crore in seven years.

As a part of the implementation, the VPT has already set up three RFID pass issue counters at DLB Ground floor which will facilitate all trade, port users, employees, visitors to get registered with the RFID pass system for various port permits like men, vehicle, driver, material and etc, a mandatory process to enter the port.

Acording to the VPT officials, the key objective of the new system is to enhance security at all gates, automate and speed up the port activity, generate visibility of activities in and around port area and to comply with ISPS (International Ship and Port Security Code).

RFID based access control system will certainly contribute to the ease of doing business in a more transparent and efficient manner, the port authorities said.
