VISAKHAPATNAM: Cracking down on an organised gang of mobile phones thieves operating in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram, the city police on Friday arrested one of the 10-member inter-state gang. However, the police have failed to recover the stolen mobile phones, which include iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones.

The arrested person has been identified as Ganga Miya (27), a native of Gorasahan village in Bihar.
Addressing newsmen, assistant commissioner of police (ACP -CCS) Y Govinda Rao said that Ganga Miya and nine others had come to Vizag  on April 19 and checked into a hotel. After conducting recce, the gang committed theft in I-magic showroom, making good with costly smart phones worth `68.45 lakh.

The police said that on April 13, the gang was in Vizianagaram and using the same modus operandi, they made good with mobile phones worth `3.5 lakh.

Sources said that after both the offences, the gang left for Bihar and reportedly sold the mobile phones in Nepal. Sources added that recovery of the smart phones is now a very tough task for police. As per the ACP, Ganga Miya once again came to the city for conducting a recce and he was nabbed here on Friday.

The ACP said they had also nabbed another seven-member gang from Bihar during checkings in lodges and guest houses in the city as a part of the  security measures for the TDP Mahanadu. The gang came to Vizag around a week ago with a plan to commit property offences.
