BENGALURU: More than a month after an unidentified man abducted a five-day-old baby girl from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the state-run Jayanagar General Hospital in Jayanagar 4th Block, the Health Department has instructed all taluk hospitals and district hospitals to install CCTV cameras for `1 lakh and `2 lakh each respectively.
The hospitals are required to follow Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement norms. The notice from the health commissioner’s office said the CCTV cameras have to be installed in sensitive places of the building (like the ICU and the entrance). Following the incident, Health Minister K R Ramesh Kumar had told the media that security will be beefed up in government hospitals and newborns will not be allowed to be carried out of the premises without producing identity cards.
“Only the mother or the father will be allowed to carry the newborn out of the hospital,” he said, a promise which is yet to be implemented in government hospitals in the city and the state.
