Coding of answer scripts helps start classes early

BENGALURU: The coding of answer scripts adopted by the department of technical education has saved over 40 days for the department and helped in starting classes earlier. The system was introduced from the 2017-18 academic year doing away with the manual sorting. Now, coding is done at the examination centre level itself.

Under the earlier system, once the examination is over in various centers in the state, all bundles of answer scripts used to be dumped in the head office in Bengaluru. “It involved a lot of manual work when all the answer scripts from across the state came to the head office. There would be bundles of answer scripts and figuring out which paper or subject and from which district they were was taking more than a month’s time,” said H U Talwar, director of Department of Technical Education.

Now, with upgradation in the coding work, the department has been able to cut down on the need for human resource, use of computers and printers and most importantly it helped start classes one month early. The coding is done before the answer papers are given to the evaluators. The decoding is done after the evaluation is done and the marks are entered.
