CHENNAI: The steel industry is set for a major push with Tata Steel increasing its presence in the steel market with a turnover of its branded products to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore and the production of galvanised steel being kept at 2 million tonnes per annum.

Launching the first ever zero spangled Galavanised brand called Galvano in the Chennai market on Tuesday, Anand Sen, Vice President (TQM and Flat Products), Tata Steel, said that the new product would meet the requirements of the auto sector, mostly transport units and the bus body building industry, though its application could well extend to other areas like construction and agriculture industry.

“Galvano is available in sheet and coil forms and is set to intensify the reach of Tata Steel further in the general engineering segment because of the product’s unmatched surface finish and mechanical proprieties,’’ Sen added.

Sen also said that the Tatal Steel products enjoyed 14 per cent market share in the country and there was enough scope to increase its base with the cold rolling mill in Jamshedpur rolling out 10 million tonnes of steel by the second half of next year.

About the delay in the launch of Kalinga Nagar project, Sen said that the ground work for the project had already been done and things would fall in place towards the end of 2012 and the production would start in all earnestness with the acquisition of the entire lands and clearing of other hassles faced by the company with the help of the Government.

Atrayee Sarkar Sanyal, Chief of Marketing (Distribution and Branded Products), Tata Steel, said that Galvano found patronage with IFB, LG and Felxtronics, besides automobile and other sectors. She also said that the product enjoyed 13 per cent market share right now though it could go up to 20 per cent in the near future.
