Netas Lock Horns with Rajan on 'One-eyed King' Phrase

NEW DELHI: The current ruling political dispensation at the Centre was critical of RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s description of the Indian economy as the “one-eyed king in the land of the blind”.

With India being often described as ‘the bright spot’ in the global economy, Rajan had said in an interview to a US-based MarketWatch that at 7.5% growth rate India seemed to be ‘one eyed king in the land of blind’.

Virtually rebutting Rajan’s remarks, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the Indian economy was growing much faster and, in fact, the fastest when compared to the rest of the world.

“Compared to the rest of the world we are growing much faster, in fact the fastest. Compared to our own potential, we can do better,” Jaitley told a private US TV channel on Tuesday.

He parried questions on government planning to give extension to Rajan whose term is coming to an end in September but did mention that the RBI has done fairly well.

Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had on Monday said if better words were used to say whatever Rajan wanted to say, it would have gone down better.
