Data analytics helped Sachin Tendulkar to extend his career, says Javagal Srinath

BENGALURU : One of world’s best cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar, could extend his career thanks to data analytics, reveals former Test Cricketer and engineer Javagal Srinath.

Srinath added that Microsoft should build artificial intelligence that makes the game more transparent and help captains, players, umpires, coaches and fans take informed decisions. But he feels that human gut feeling can never be challenged.

“Technology is to help build on human decisions,” said Joseph Sirosh, Corporate VP, Data Group, Microsoft during a panel discussion. Machine learning is all set to bring accuracy in predicting target scores in rain interrupted T20 matches and to enhance the existing Duckworth Lewis method. “Technology will always be used as a slave and umpires will be masters… but technology does put pressure,” said Srinath.

Aakash Chopra, former cricketer, added that data analytics would improve broadcasting, making it interactive. Microsoft Bing, predicting other games with machine learning, predicted the outcome of 15 of 16 knockout games in 2014. The panel agreed that tech accuracy can be questioned and it should be used as an option, not the ultimate tool.
