CHENNAI: State Transport Undertakings continue to be one of the largest drivers of bus sales in India with Tata Motors on Monday stating that it has bagged orders for over 5,000 buses worth of around Rs 900 crore from 25 state/city transport undertakings (STUs) across the country.

The number of orders has seen the firm’s order book rising by almost 80 per cent compared to last year.

“Tata Motors plans to execute all these orders in 2016-17. The orders will definitely enable us to further strengthen our leadership position in the CV passenger space,” Tata Motors Executive Director, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Ravi Pisharody said in an official  statement. According to Tata, orders from several STUs  and city transport providers show a noticeable shift towards new technology, safety, comfort features and connected IT enabled buses.

Over 1,500 of the buses will be fully built and have these features intergrated at the Tata Motors joint venture  manufacturing facility at Tata Marcopolo (Dharwad and Lucknow) and ACGL Goa.
