CHENNAI: Customer care centres of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd in several parts of the State were affected as most of the employees of the public sector unit abstained from work demanding implementation of the 7th Pay Commission report.
A Chennai Telephones spokesperson said that nearly a quarter of Chennai Telephones employees abstained from work.

However, she said that BSNL services were not affected in Chennai. Customer care centres functioned, though the footfalls were fewer when compared to the usual day crowd, she said.
There were some issues with the customer care centres in RK Nagar and Kodambakkam. However, they functioned with police protection, she added.

M Kaniappan, convener of BSNL Employees Union and Association, Chennai Telephones, said that the strike was 90 per cent successful. A majority of unions participated except the National Federation of Telecom Employees Union, he said.
The State secretary of BSNL Employees Union said 9,000 employees, officers and contract workers took part in the strike.
