CHENNAI: The city’s most affordable edutainment — Guindy Children’s Park — has gotten a new attraction, and visitors are making a beeline to get a glimpse. The buzz is about newborn blackbuck fawns and peacocks chicks.

The blackbuck or Indian antelope, which is a Scheduled 1 animal under Wildlife Protection Act 1972, is a major crowd puller in the park, and the two fawns are definitely adding glitter.
“The fawns are healthy and about three weeks old,” said forest ranger Kanniyappan A. The pregnancy period of blackbucks is similar to goats, which is six months.

Equally attractive are the two newborn peacock chicks. Female peafowls usually don’t breed in captivity, but it happened at the park. Out of the five eggs that were laid, the mother fed on three and two survived. Chicks that don’t have the iridescent plumage of their parents and look like normal country chicks are carefully being watched, the official said.
