BANGALORE: Senior IPS officer Kempaiah is said to have sought VRS, and put in his papers on Saturday. But neither the Director General and Inspector of Police Ajaikumar Singh nor Kempaiah would confirm the news. When contacted, Kempaiah who is at present posted as Assistant Director General and Inspector of Police (Internal Security) told Express that he has applied for a month’s leave, and refused to comment on the suspected resignation.
Speculations were abuzz throughout the day that the senior officer has decided to quit because of personal reasons, and alleged differences with Singh. Kempaiah is at the high point of his career as he had successfully hunted down Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins in Bangalore. He had led the Karnataka police team that tracked Sivarasan, prime accused in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case, to his hideout in Konana Kunte outside Bangalore. However, Sivarasan killed himself before he could be captured.
Kempaiah also served in Mysore District. Till he was deputed to Mysore, the Police Commissioner did not have an office of his own, and was functioning from a temporary premise on Lalitha Mahal Palace Road, in the office of the KSRP.
Sources have revealed that when he was recently promoted as ADGP, Internal Security, in the month of May ,he was not provided with the facilities he was entitled for.
As the department functioned without following any procedures, and as Kempaiah also lacked support from his associates, he applied for VRS, the same sources said. The departmental sources also revealed that for the past one week there wes friction between Kempaiah and Singh. However, Singh when contacted, refused to comment on the issue.
Kempaiah has handled a number of sensational cases like booking Shradhananda for murdering his wife Shakereh Khaleeli, but was also recently charged by the Lok Ayukta with both corruption and misconduct. However, Kempaiah was subsequently cleared of all charges.
He is also one of the few living people from Karnataka who has had a movie made about his life.
