BANGALORE: A local Congress leader escaped an attempt on his life and was admitted to hospital with injuries after unidentified persons rammed a lorry into his car and then opened fire at him near Nelamangala on the city outskirts today, police said.

'BEML' Krishnappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Bangalore Zilla Panchayat, was injured and is recovering in a hospital, where he was admitted after the attack, they said.

Police said the assailants followed Krishnappa's car in a lorry and rammed it from behind following which the car overturned. The gang members then opened fire at Krishnappa and his gunman, who returned the fire, seriously injuring one of them.

The motive for the attack was not immediately known and efforts to nab the culprits are on, police said.
