BANGALORE: Wikipedia says environmentalism is “a broad philospphical and social movement centred on conserving and improving our natural environment”. Today, as we observe the World Environment Day, it is important to understand the gravity of issues like greenhouse gas emissions, energy waste and to realise that we all play can play a part, however small, in keeping our Earth safe. Here is what some of the organisation in our city are doing. You can join them or follow their lead.

● Get your hands dirty. Biodiversity Conservation India (BCIL) in association with Reva, invites all to a ‘Make a Seedball’ activity. This initiative will have Chandrashekar Hariharan, CEO-BCIL as the guest of honour and Krishna Byre Gowda as a special invitee. The evnt will be held at Bal Bhavan at Cubbon Park from 3 p.m. onwards.

● Zee Café also takes the green turn. At World Environment day, all across youth hangouts including The Only Place (Museum Road), Chung Wah, Mocha (Lavelle Road and Koramangala), The Grill House, Desmonds, Café Beans Talk, Casa Del Sol, Casa Piccola, Wok With Chung and Mast Kalandar amongst others, Bangaloreans can take home a sapling and care for it, for free. Get to your closest Zee Café ‘Green’ destination, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. today.

● Bangalore based IT-player Ness Technologies India has based its initiatives on ‘Bring Back the Birds’, a drive to revive the population of winged wonders that once flourished in urban Bengaluru.

A seedball campaign will also feature at the event, where employees of Ness India plan will make 50,000 seed balls of bird attracting trees. Also on the agenda is a campaign — ‘NurtureNess’, a yearlong programme in which a set of saplings (bird attracting plants) would be placed in a designated area on campus.

● Japanese watch maker Citizen is collaborating with NGO Eco-Watch to make earth a greener place. Every customer who purchases a Citizen watch during June 1 to 5 from Citizen’s ‘Go Green’ outlets will be gifted a reusable bag. On this special day, Citizen will also plant saplings with the NGO Eco Watch, which will be equal to the number of Eco-Drive watches sold during this period.

● The Leela Palace has organised a 5 km marathon for its employees and outsiders from the hotel to the Government School in Kadrenpalya. The primary objective of this is to raise awareness amongst its employees and the society to combat global climate change. This would be followed by a tree planting ceremony at the school. To join the marathon report at the Leela Palace, at 6.45 am.

● World Environment Foundation in association with Institute of Directors, Bangalore Management Association, Maini Group, REVA, Karnataka State Pollution Board and Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services along with their partners and Citizen Forum group invites you for the launch of ‘Global Human Chain — Proactivate to combat climate change’at BRV Police Ground, MG Road. The conference will be addressed by BS Yediyurappa, CM of Karnataka, Justice MN Venkatchaliah, National Chairman IOD and others.
