BANGALORE: Kalari Academy of Performing Arts (KAPA) presents Sammilan 09, an international festival of contemporary dance and Kalaripayattu art, with a zealous mission to showcase India’s rich cultural heritage, focusing on the proud lineage in the field of martial arts. This will be the apt platform to showcase the seamless blend of contemporary dance with the ancient martial art, Kalaripayattu, presented by talented young artists from India and abroad.
The festival will include three special dance compositions.
‘Vipasana’ by Maja Drobac, a world renowned dancer and choreographer from Croatia. Maja, who enjoys exploring cultures, expresses herself by transcending cultural boundaries through this dance piece.
‘Musical Combat’ choreographed by Veena Basavarajaiah and performed by thesenior artists of PKB Kalari Sangam, Kerala. This composition explores the lyrical quality of Kalaripayattu movements when tuned to western classical music.
‘Shristi - call for the peace’ is a creation by multi-facted Roopa Ravindran, a classical and contemporary dancer and model-actress, and will be performed by the senior artists of Kalari Academy of Performing Arts, Bangalore.
Here, Roopa pays respect to the majestic animals roaming around in the forests, which historically symbolise grace, speed, power and beauty.
The dance festival does not limit itself to one evening of performance. Through the programme, KAPA will raise funds to teach Kalaripayattu to challenged children residing in Peace Child orphanage home in the city. The primary objective of this programme is to address physical and mental health that is the psycho- physiological requirements of the individual or child through a basic training regimen rooted in Kalaripayattu.
