BANGALORE: Hitting a record production of 20,067 transformers in the last fiscal, the Karnataka Vidyuth Karkhane Limited (KAVIKA) will expand its operations by increasing its staff.

Addressing a press conference on Monday Chairman of KAVIKA, B P Venkatamuniyappa said,”After financial troubles in 2003-04 forced us to reduce almost 40 per cent of our workforce we have managed to recover and reach levels of production which are the highest since 2001.” KAVIKA supplies distribution transformers to all Energy Supply Companies (ESCOMS) and other private buyers.

“We currently have 208 staff members and are running one shift. We want to increase it to two shifts and hence will seek permission from the government to take on additional staff,” said  MD of KAVIKA Pratap Kumar. Kumar added that based on Central government’s instructions, efficient transformers with a three-star rating were approved for purchase.

According to company figures, KAVIKA supplied 11,000 transformers in 2011 to BESCOM may supply upto 25,000 this year. “We offer a guarantee of 2-3 years on our products and the failure rate so far has been around  one per cent within the guarantee period,” said Venkatamuniyappa.

Formed in 1976 as a successor to the Government Electric Factory, KAVIKA is the oldest distribution transformers manufacturing industry in the country. “KAVIKA may purchase automatic winding machines, which will increase production by 30 per cent. It has called for tenders for Core Formation Assembly,” Kumar added.
