BANGALORE: Officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) along with police on Saturday, razed the encroached area in Malleswaram Market. Following which, vendors blocked Sampige Road for more than an hour.
One of the oldest markets in Bangalore, the Malleswaram Market has 249 stalls, most of which sell flowers, vegetables and fruits.
Based on severalcomplaints by public that there was shortage of space to walk in the passage area in the market, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike swung into action.
Venkataswamy, a businessman, who runs a stall since 1966, said, “The Palike gave us a notice three days ago, but did not mention the time or duration, about when the shops will be removed. On Saturday at around 8.30 am they started removing our belongings. I have suffered a loss of `15,000 from my shop alone.”
Lakshmi Devi, a vegetable vendor, said that she has been running the shop for the past four decades.
“Our materials have been destroyed. I have incurred a loss of at least `10,000,” she further added.
