Project on parking system bags prize at competition

A team of aspiring engineers from the city-basedInternational Institute of Information Technology walked away with the grandprize at the Intel India’s Embedded Challenge 2012 on Wednesday.

Their project on ‘Smart Parking System using Wireless SensorNetworks’ was adjudged the best embedded intelligent systems theme, along withanother project titled, ‘Development of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle forCoastal Monitoring Applications’ by students from IIT-Kanpur.

“This year we had about 2,800 people who registered for thechallenge and we saw 688 entries. Thirty four best ideas were shortlisted. Mostare from college students, but we also have people who have already,” saidJitendra Chaddah, director Intel Indian Strategic Development and Operations.Joseph Jeffrey, Roshan G Patil and Skanda Kumar K N from IIIT- B worked on asystem to monitor the availability of free parking slots and guiding vehiclesto the nearest free slot. Additional information like amount of time thevehicle has been parked is also monitored for billing purposes.

The winners received a cash prize of `5 lakh each in theevent.
