Girl drowns at Wonderla wave pool

BANGALORE: A school excursion to Wonderla amusement park on the outskirts of the city turned tragic as a 12-year-old girl drowned in the wave pool on Monday afternoon. Shabreena Taj, a sixth standard student of Matha School in R T Nagar, is the deceased.

According to the police, the school authorities had organised a trip to the park located in Bidadi. Around 120 students, along with a few teachers, had gone there in two buses.

Around 3 pm Taj went inside a wave pool with her friends. She accidentally fell inside the pool and drowned. The rescue personnel jumped in and tried to save her. She was immediately rushed to Raja Rajeshwari Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Speaking to Express, Ramanagaram SP Anupam Agrawal, said that it had to be investigated how exactly the incident happened. “ If the negligence of the park authorities is found, action will be taken against them. The girl’s parents in their complaint have also blamed the school management for their negligence,” he explained.

Bidadi police have registered a case and are investigating further. It may be recalled here that Tejas (9) was found dead in the swimming pool of the Residency Holiday Resort near Begur in Nelamangala  on November 5, 2011.  A fourth standard student at Mother Teresa English School at T Dasarahalli in Jalahalli, he had gone on a picnic organised by the school management.

In a statement, Rudresh, AGM, Wonderla, regretting the incident, said, “Shabreena’s family is our top priority now and we are making every effort to be of help and assistance to the family. We are with them and deeply regret what has happened.”
